4TNS-10 ADA info has been updated, 102 premises with be getting copper (FTTB):

I would hazard a guess that that 82 would be that estate/complex at Aqua Bella rd, near the post office.

and the 20 would probably be those new units off lower William street or somewhere around there.

We're still working on it, and we've made some progress. If you check back in February 2016 we should have some news.

Thanks man. I'll certainly do that. Since we should be RFS in April that timing would be perfect.

just got a letter in the mail, nbn all over it, could see it stating they were going to install equipment out the front of my property. Figured I will get a node out front, at least my speeds will be good. opened it up, actually says I will get the equipment to connect me to FTTP installed on my house somewhere between 20 Jan and 13Jun 16!

    Best Xmas ever!

(Im in Saba St, Burdell (North Shore))

    Edit: 13 not 16 Jun

You're in the 4DEG-01 rollout region, which is using a mixture of technologies to connect to the NBN (FTTP: 34.5%, FTTN: 65.5%).

    http://www.mynbn.info/rollout/4DEG-01

You've got more chance of being FTTN, but if you're getting FTTP than thank god for that!!!!

Yup, I was pretty sure given my line syncs at 21/1 (4 years ago was 24/1) that I would be FTTN all the way. When I saw the letter in my box, the big window on the front allowed me to read enough that it looked like it was saying My property would get a node out the front. Once I opened it, it specifically states "They will connect the fibre optic cable from the street to a small nbn utility box to be installed on the outside of your property". (Note that it all references them attaching it to my house, and having my install done, not building a node out front)

    Edit:
    Photo of letter
    http://ocau.com/pix/8ayuz

Note the first thing I could see was the big blue writing which made me think Node on my lawn, but its obvious from the rest its FTTP and referencing installing the PCD on my house.

Figured I will get a node out front,

I also received this letter today (Bushland Beach) and thought exactly the same thing :)

I don't know whether they still send this letter out to all homes in the areas they are doing work in (i.e. as a carryover from their old program), or have specifically picked out the FTTP houses.

I checked my address on the DevotedNBN SQ and it showed up as Service Class 0 so I guess that's as good a sign as any (checked another address closer to the water, and it said SC10, so maybe it is up-to-date).

I guess you won't know for sure until you get your PCD but it's definitely something to keep an eye out for next year.

  • aXi$te

Seeing how there is no install at the home needed for fttn, i should hope they send a completely different letter.

Since i now know to expect NBN in the next 6 months, who should I change providers to? Currently on Internode, but 100gb isnt enough, been looking at telstra or foxtel 500gb+ plans, but telstra wont budge on pricing / bonuses, if i go the foxtel route, minimum 12 month contract. I can imagine i wont want to be on either once fibre is on.

  • aXi$te

Lots of shiny Green fibre going in at the intersection of North Shore Boulevard and Burdell Dr (opposite Macca's), being pulled along Burdell Dr over the last few days.

Lots of nbn works happening again along Percy/Bundock St They have been smashing it out in the last few days! The docs have been updated 4TNS-10 is still 26-Feb-2016 :( Ive been checking my pcd and the cables been terminated Not sure when it happened just a cut cable for a long time...

Beautiful green fibre being pulled in at the intersection of Waterway Dr and Iona Ave, and another roll being pulled in at Iona Ave and Biscayne St, North Shore, oh so close.

I'm in Oonoonba, on the Wulguru exchange MyNBN says builds in our area will be starting Q4 2016/Q1 2017... any idea how exact this is? Will it be FTTP or FTTN? My NBN says it'll be a mix.

I'm with Exetel, the past six months or so speeds have been attrocious can't get more than 40-50KB during peak hours and on weekends, I wonder if it's everyone using Netflix. I don't mind if we get FTTN, as long as I can use our connection! I've heard there's an NBN wireless tower on Mount Stuart, does this mean we'll be able to use fixed wireless NBN any time soon?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news the predictions may speed up a little but you will most likely be waiting until the end of the 2016 NBN tower on Mt.Stuart is a relay, and does not provide a service. NBN prep work has started in Condon. Crews on Gouldian Ave, Currawong Street, Riverway Drive and Beck Road sighted today and yesterday.

Asked one of the workers what was going on. At the moment, they're just "proving services" ready for NBN. Whatever that means.. awesome to see it happening in our neck of the woods though :)

So when we go live am I able to order an NTD from ISP and force the PCD process along or will they know there is no PCD at my residence or just make me wait until NBN get around to it.
Can they wield any influence with the PCD rollout if they have a customer ready to sign up?

If the infrastructure is in place, then yes you may get the PCD and NTD installed at the same time. Sometimes an area will be RFS, but not all dwellings will be able to order a service straight away.

Noticed on mynbninfo, we have 28 unlucky premesis somewhere in Mount Louisa getting FTTN instead.

Dont really know of any unit blocks this way, so best i can think is one of the new old age places they have built/building recently.

Looking for some advice; our office on Martinez Ave has not yet been hooked up. We had a guy come in from ISGM and look at pulling a cable into the building mid last year. They never came back. I called them this year and they said they had lost the contract for the area, and to call NBNco.

NBN Co website says that service is available in my area, but there could be an issue with my address. When I spoke to them on the phone they didn't know what was going on, and said they would call me when it's ready to install. Catch is, there don't seem to be any installers working in the area anymore. Tried booking installation with the ISP but they came back saying they can't do it yet.

    What should I do now?

  • Jordee

Well, it appears that 4TNS-10 may not go RFS today. I've gone back through 3 years of Telstra RFS dates for Townsville, the only time there has been a delay at the last minute was for 4TNS-08, which was delayed by one day (26th instead of 25th November 2015).

If 4TNS-10 has been delayed for longer than this, it's the first time I have ever seen such a discrepancy between the information that Telstra puts out weekly vs nbn. Extremely disappointed if this is the case. :(

Well I'm your other brother from another mother and feeling the pain here too in 4-TNS10. I still don't have a PCD but today I signed over to Belong ADSL as my Internode account rolls over in 4 days so I thought I'd churn even though we don't seem to be RFS yet.My plan is to go monthly with Belong until Skymesh become available (fingers crossed that will be soon) so starting with their ADSL+ 500GB plan and saying goodbye to Internode. And if we go RFS tonight, tomorrow or next week I will order their NBN month to month plan. Couldnt quite bring myself to commit with Telstra for 24 months with the promise of Skymesh arriving soon (AFAIK).

Well, out of the 11 brownfield areas nationwide that were supposed to be RFS yesterday, 8 made it (8KTH-01 went RFS on the 25th and a few were added overnight), and all of them are FTTN/MTM. The 3 that didn't go RFS are all FTTP. I'd say going off past history, 4TNS-10 will go RFS on Monday.

  • Troy.NET

Oh well...my first outage on NBN today after 5 months being connected. Not happy but hey at least I got it. I'm on Internode and was wondering if anyone else is affected today using other ISP's as the automated voice on Internode support specifically said Townsville.

It mean that service is available, but no NTD or PCD is installed.

Best I could get was 15th March as I dont have a PCD. Had to convince the Belong operator that he could place an order . Being class 1 he initially said he couldn't take an order. I told him how else was I going to get a PCD if he didn't place a service request. He put me on hold again and came back a few minutes later to say he could place an order and gave me the 15th 8-12. Worried I might need trenching to get a line in so not holding out great hopes for a completed install that day but at least the end is in real sight at last. Look forward to hearing anout your successful installs this weekend :)

Yea must be lucky because he said nbn don't do install on the weekend But someone on here not long ago had theirs installed on the weekend. Then once the nbn site loaded up for him he said wow there is a Saturday appointment for 8-12 or 12-4 So someone else might have taken that one. As I wanted the 8am booking :p I tried to get a contact number for the contractor but was unable to get one and was told he will ring me half hour before hand Hope it's not a horror no show Will let you's know how I get on.

EDIT: Nope, looks like I'll have to call them tomorrow. Once again, stellar performance from Telstra, the opening line from me being "Want to order NBN with Telstra but can't via your website as I require priority assistance on the phone service" leading to a long conversation, verifications and an eventual "Go to telstra.com.au/nbn" or similar amazing advice. Got the medium bundle (400GB) for $89 at 100/40. They offered the 1000gb at 100/40 for $119 but I won't use that sort of data realistically

Yeah depending on my usage, I might go down a step in my plan. I noticed that my free data has disappeared from my current bill...I will chase this up with them after I'm connected, don't want to risk muddying the waters beforehand lol.

Telstra have already contacted me 3 times(!) today regarding my appointment for next Monday, and have told me they will send email updates as well.

*edit* hang on, did they offer to waive the $30 100/40 speed boost altogether??

Yeah, I asked about the $99 for 1000gb on the website and he said it's a mistake. I said come on, it's the banner ad. He said do you actually want that much data and I said I'd rather kiddy a faster connection to be honest

    He took ages and came back and said 400 @ 100/40 for $89 or 1000 @ 100/40 for $119

I'm not going to use their gateway nor telstra tv and I don't think I'd use >400GB so I took the cheaper option

What bundle did you get interfreak?

  • interfreak

    I'm on the 500GB $119/month plan with (a discounted) $23 speed boost to 100/40 so $142, then a $10 discount that I've had forever makes it $132.

I'm supposed to get 300GB bonus data a month, but for some reason that disappeared off my current bill...

Like I said I'm gonna bargain hard after I'm connected lol

    So not a bundle?

Like I said the large bundle was on offer for $119 with 1000gb of data, 100/40, telstra tv, better gateway, all calls included (except international)

I'd shoot for that if you need the data

I have some happy friends in Rowes bay and Belgian Gardens, I emailed them last night to let them know they were RFS, both signed up for NBN today.

Both couples, one in their eighties and the other in their seventies have been hanging on waiting for FTTH, both properties have had almost unusable ADSL1 (all the lines could support) on a very good day, 1.8 to 2.4 Mbs downloads and virtually useless phone connections, so much noise on the line.

The couple in their eighties are already making big plans for the better speed and higher data allowance for a cheaper price than what the adsl and phone connections cost now, with their own desktop each there will be no holding them back! previously everything slowed to a crawl if they were both online at the same time.

both my friends in Rowes Bay and Belgian Gardens got their NBN installation dates this morning, Rowes bay Monday 7th and Belgian gardens Tuesday 8th.

must be a few installers standing around at the moment, it wasn't that long ago 3 to 4 weeks was considered a short wait, they can hardly wait after years of very mediocre phone and internet service

I live in West End unfortunately it seems small apartment blocks still aren't listed as active. Unfortunately this means the regular houses either side of me are all ready for NBN, but there is no indication of how long it will be until we can get it.

The grey NBN boxes are on the wall as of a few weeks ago and everything else seems to be fine.

I'm getting worried because the last Unit block I was in (North Ward) had the external grey boxes on the wall for 18 months with no connection available. I ended up moving out before they actually got a connection there.

Does anyone know what's going on with the small unit blocks? I have tried ringing my ISP (Internode) but they don't know anything more than I do. I'm pretty sure NBN doesn't want to talk to me as i'm only renting.

My Mum lives in Eden St (Belgian Gardens) at a unit complex and they aren't RFS yet either. They also seem to have the external equipment installed.

There's no real way to know when it will be RFS, but maybe shoot an email off to your ISP or even nbn to see if you can get some info.

So do I ,and I live in an apartment block. TNS-9 went live in December and I have 100/40 FTTP with Internode.
The apartment buildings either side of us have FTTB :(

The reason we have FTTP is that I constantly rang and emailed NBN and drove them crazy, telling them our Body Corporate did not want sub standard VDSL FTTB.

So if you sit back nothing will happen, you have to agitate and make noise! Contact your local Federal Member ( I did) and complain!
Contact your agent and try and get to talk to the owner of your apartment and explain to him the difference between FTTP and VDSL!

Your area is NBN live and you have the PCD installed.

Woohoo I think I might have jumped the NTD queue!
After ordering my service with Belong and being given an appointment of 15th for presumably PCD and NTD install and service provision.
Then today I receive a call from NBNCo out of the blue saying they dropped around yesterday to check out my lead in.
He was having trouble locating the conduit where it appears at our house and think it may enter in an internal wall.
I think I know where to point him as my office is was once a carport attached to the original house now closed in to make a room and I can see conduit and what looks like an old telstra cover coming up out of my carpet against what was the original external wall.
Anyway he wanted to organise a time to come while I was here to investigate further and with luck pull fibre from the pit to the house and do my PCD and my NTD all in the same visit.
I said I would be home all day tomorrow and he said he will book it in and see me then. Fingers crossed he can pull fibre from the pit.

It is a relief but I think the rain may have scuppered any lead-in work for today.
Yet to hear back from him he said he would call once he had his day's jobs lined up after 8am but nothing yet.
Again I'll take the rain gratefully over a quick install.

Also on further inspection of the conduit coming up in my office absolutely nothing coming up that pipe into the house any more. So the point at which copper arrives at the house is still a mystery. I've had Telstra techs unsuccessfully look for this when coming to sort out my ADSL issues when we first moved in 3 years ago.
Would Telstra have plans for where the copper lead in was placed back in 1977?

Hope everyone else has smooth NTD installs over the coming days. Keep us posted.

I'm up on Little street and I have not heard or seen anyone. I've been holding off from getting adsl in the meantime because apparently there isn't any space in the adsl hub and in order to make space I would have to spend a few "minutes" talking with Telstra. I've been following this space since I've moved to Townsville a couple of months ago but I'm worried nothing will get done any time soon. From what I can tell most of Belgian Gardens is still service class 0 which means a lot of work still needs to be done.

Awesome! Congrats interfreak I am very, very envious.

Had the NBN (Electrotek) guy here this morning to try and do my PCD and NTD and we could not find where my LIC arrives at the house.
We found the cable but it comes down out of my eaves down the exterior wall and punches through to a phone wall plate.
We assume it was run through the ceiling from wherever it originally arrived at the house to the new exterior wall.

Problem is the ceilings here have no cavity that can be inspected as they are all cathedral style. So he gave up and has referred it back to NBNCo for trenching :(

I have no idea how big a job that is or what the typical turnaround is but he suggested I call them if they havent turned up or called within a couple of days. I am hoping they don't need to do a complete new trench but can detect the current LIC underground close to the house and dig to reveal wherever it arrives at the house.
He seemed to think though that they could trench, run the new LIC and do PCD and NTD all in the one visit. I really hope that's the case. I have a big job requiring transfer of many Gb of footage starting at the end of this week that would really be helped by a 100/40 connection. I live in hope.

I'm planning on upgrading to a new router though to make sure I'm maximising it all. Planning on building a shit hot new desktop PC too, this Q6600 really isn't cutting it haha. So the engineering guys rocked up 30 minutes ago and started scratching their heads about how they were going to run the trench.
They are going to do a complete new run from pit to house but its a pretty long run and they have to jackhammer up some tarmac when they cross my drive twice.
They said they'd be back Friday to to trench the LIC. Looks like my original date of the 15th that Belong gave me will stand if they can get the LIC done on Friday.
I got the impression they would only do the LIC and maybe the PCD but not the NTD. I still have a booking for the 15th that can sort out the NTD install.

Pretty sure Friday is going to involve them hacking through some irrigation lines on the verge. Should I be prepared with some joiners on the day for my own make good or just worry about sorting that out afterwards.

Belong are due to hook me up with ADSL tomorrow as a churn from Internode (this was supposed to happen last week) and then change me on to their NBN plan due on Monday. They are a division of Telstra so I dont imagine they are going to penalise me for dumping them in favour of their parent company's product. Happy to post both installations have been done and working well, the friend in Belgian Gardens is blown away with the speed (only 12/1), but considering she has been coping with about 1.5Mbps downloads on a good day all these years, I suppose it's a bit like getting out of a Fiat 500 into a Ferrari.

I can visualise her going up to a higher tier once she becomes more used to the fact she now has the reliability and the data allowance to do what she likes, and even planning to use the fixed phone again, now she has a stable noise free connection for the first time in over a decade!

I think so, I haven't tried it myself however (I have an AE as well). I'm fining the WiFi on the Gateway Max to be pretty good, on the 5Ghz band at least. Well if I understand correctly, you normally get a maximum download of appox 10% of your connection speed. So in theory if its 12.1 then 10% of 12 = 1.2 Mbps, which is slower than the 1,5 ?

I am now on 100/40 FTTP with Internode, and the absolute maximum I have ever been able to download, briefly was 4 Mbps, not 10 Mbps? Usually around 2 to 3 Mbps is all I get.

Also ever since I got FTTP I have never had higher than a 26 Upload speed never once in the 30s?

Internode at my request checked everything with NBN and told me thats the best I will ever get?

Well, 100 megabits per second equals 12.5 megabytes a second. To convert mbps to MB/s you divide Mbps by 8 (100/8=12.5).

    So, 4MB/s is 32mbps, 2Mb/s is 16mbps.

The speed you download at even with a 100/40 connection will vary greatly depending on where your downloading the file from, congestion on the server or network, the list goes on.

It is with Telstra, TPG is 12/1 and a lot of the other RSP are still 12/1 as a minimum

I followed up with TPG for another friend regarding her speed (100/40) as lately it has been at a maximum download of 40 at best, TPG did follow it up and escalated it to their higher level NBN faults section, all their techs rang to discuss it with me and asked for further test info, they then referred it to NBN.

The latest feedback is interesting, her speed is now back to around 94/31, NBN said this is currently the best obtainable at the moment, but also inferred there is a problem with some connections on the network originating out of the Gulliver Exchange, but an upgrade is in progress which will result in better consistency of speeds in the next couple of months.

If anybody has been driving along Hugh Street in the last few weeks, there has been directional boring and conduit laid heading from Ingham road direction and appears to be heading to the Gulliver exchange, so it may be possible this could be associated with the so called" upgrade"

Unfortunately not because of the rain. They knocked on my door Thursday and said they would reschedule for Tuesday which is my current NTD appointment date. I did chase up Telstra the day after I placed my order as they they hadn't followed up.
They couldn't find my order as it likely had been keyed in sometimes its a 24-48 hour wait for online orders to appear in their system.
So I placed a new order while on the phone and managed to to get my speed boost completely free so now paying $119 a month instead of $129. Was happy about that.
Also got talked into the FOXTEL offer free install and free 3 months which I will certainly cancel at end. Happy to take a bit of Rupert's skin and get 3 months of decent F1 coverage that he stole from free to air not to mention most of GoT Season 6 and most of the Brumbies season in Super Rugby.
So hoping Tuesday is the day if this rain holds off but realistically my NTD appointment may need to be rescheduled to a day after the trenching. That could hold things up again as I think different contractors are responsible for NTDs.

Looks as though Idalia is scheduled for end of this year start of build for FTTN, so ages away, and obsolete technology. For a family of 4, 100/40 was just brilliant. No crafting QoS policies on home routers to try and carve up a working allocation of tiny bandwidth, just let everyone access whatever they want whenever they want.

Fek! Electrotek contractor came back today to pull the LIC fibre expecting a trench and conduit to have been done last Friday. Nobody is talking to each other it seems! I guess that's too much to expect.
Trenching crew are due tomorrow after cancelling Friday. So Electrotek guys will be back to pull fibre Wednesday and maybe put in my NTD as well.
Telstra will call me back end of Wednesday to see what has happened and then sort out an appointment for modem and hookup. So best case now is Thursday but even that is probably optimistic. I just want my NBN... sigh.

It is an option, but will cost thousands of dollars to do so, depending on how much extra fibre has to be laid and numerous other factors (Planning, cost of civil works, terrain etc etc).

Let me just squash this for you right now unfortunately. I've been through the technology choice rigmarole since November and all I have to show for $660 is a throwaway one liner quote of "between 13k and 16k" with no further information. Noting also, that this is where there is already existing fibre, duct work with full accessability to NBNCo, and the multi-port can't be too far away (don't have the exact distance yet, and I'm not hopeful of actually every finding out). I'm not sure if you have a lazy $16k to blow on fibre, but if you do, then power to you, let me know how it goes!

Same! It's an odd feeling not to have to worry about bandwidth now..

Some things I've noticed after a week of being connected:

    • Connection has been rock solid, just a few WiFi issues with the router
    • Apple TV shows/trailers now stream instantly (or within a few seconds), whereas before it could take up to 8 minutes to even start
    • Netflix streams instantly in HD, no pixilation at all
    • YouTube is a million times better, can even stream 4K videos without buffering
    • Downloaded a 3GB update on PSN, it took less than 7 minutes. Before NBN, it would have taken an hour
    • GTA Online (and other online games) is much, much better after playing tethered to my phone for so long. Pings are massively reduced, hardly any lag now
    • Had to throw out an Ethernet cable as I hadn't used it for so long, as I mainly used to tether to my phone to get faster (and more stable) speeds. I think the ends corroded
    • Running speed tests never gets old lol

    I've had a good day.
Trenching crew turned up first thing and got stuck into it despite the threatening drizzle. Cut a swath across the length of our grass verge with the vac ditch witch and then the jack hammer took over to cut a slot across our drive to the fence line. They happily ran conduit above ground down the fence towards my house not sure if that is in spec or not but I 'm not concerned if they're not.
Then it went back into another jack hammered and sluiced trench across our driveway to the wall outside my office. They were done by midday and 30 minutes later the Electrotek guy calls me and says he was originally booked to do the NTD today and was the LIC completed. I gladly told him it was ready and he said he would be over in 10 minutes.
He did some work on the NTD mount and drilled the hole through the wall and then went to pull the fibre and had some difficulty. The new conduit run is about 40 metres so he had to get another crew member to come out and assist.
Eventually it was all sorted after about 2 hours and I now have a shiny termination box wired and ready to go.
So another call to Telstra to tell them the good news and they confirmed the original NTD ID matched the one raised with my Belong order that was cancelled so with that knowledge finally sorted he could complete my order and give me an activation date and time of... Friday. So another three day wait before I get my wings. Oh well that at least is a firm date with little to stop it other than my modem not arriving on Thursday as promised.
    Almost there.

  • interfreak

    Awesome news mate!! ^_^

As for the modem, as long as you have one with a WAN port you're good to go. Of course you need the Gateway Max that Telstra provides for your voice service however.

  • ac124

I've got a Belong ADSL modem sitting here waiting for a bag to arrive for it to be returned. It has a WAN port so I could give that a go.

Coming off 4.5mbs net on a really good day to a stable 25mbs (less overheads) it feels wonderful.

    - Downloading TV shows being able to click on the 720p links and know in easily in 10-15 minutes it will be done and I can just easily wast that time looking up stuff on the net.
    - Updating games and being able to play the same night is a blessing
    - Playing games and downloading torrents at the same time

The best part is although 5 times the speed currently feels great and Im happy to wait after being on such poor net for so long when I do get sick of it I have the option to upgrade to a higher tier plan.

I tried lots of config options last night. I assume a yellow indicator on the NTD port that the ethernet cable is connected to is normal status? I read on a guide I found online that is how it should look.I tried connecting to the WAN port on my Airport Extreme and connecting with DHCP automatically but no good. I did read that to do this you need to have a 5th gen Airport unfortunately mine is 4th Gen. I then tried a direct connection from NTD to my iMac again connecting with automatic DHCP and renewing the lease but I got a warning that the iMac had a self- assigned IP and that that was a problem. I had no idea what to override with manually so gave up there. Also tried the Airport in Bridge mode to no avail.
The Belong Sagemcom modem strangely gave me a green light on the NTD UNI-D status light and again connecting to it's wireless network didnt give me a successful internet connection. I have tried feeding an ethernet cable from one of the Sagemcom LAN ports to my Airport or directly to my iMac neither worked. I reset the Belong modem to bridge mode hoping that might work but no dice. Just going around in circles now so giving up until Telstra gateway arrives tomorrow.
I am assuming that them "turning the service on" on Friday just mean enabling the phone component and cutting off my copper service would that be right? I should be able to access internet through the NTD before this happens?

If the UNI-D indicator light is yellow, it means that the NTD is connected to a 1Gbps device. Green means it's connected to a 100Mbps device.

If the Optical indicator is lit green, you have an active service and are good to go. :)

Yeah all those indicators check out fine, it's just the config of either the ADSL modem, the Airport or even a direct Ethernet connection that's got me stumped.
I guess I'll just have to be patient and wait for the Gateway to arrive but it's bloody frustrating knowing 100/40 is there on my wall but I can't figure out how to get it received by my desktop.

Well I guess my service has not been activated if that is possible while still getting green indicator on Optical lamp.
He did say I wouldn't be activated until Friday 8am but I thought that might only pertain to phone services.

Thanks mate it's been a long wait so relieved it's finally happened.
Just uploaded a 700Mb approval to Vimeo in around 4 minutes awesome. And have been enjoying the novelty of watching HD trailers play without pausing on the Apple TV.
I got a better test result through the Airport second time around 75Mbps down but still only 20Mbps up.

The Ookla Speedtest app on the ATV only showed me getting a max of 6Mbps down and about 7 up on my 5GHz network but signal strength is pretty low as the lounge room and ATV is a bit of a way from my Airport Extreme. I had extended my 2.4Ghz network with an Express so that has full strength signal on the ATV but only half the speed at about 3Mbps down.
So hoping the T-Gateway is going to do a whole lot better and that I can get away without extending the network as I think my Airport Express could also be a generation or two less than ideal.
For some reason the Express only extends the 2.4Ghz network and not the 5.
I might need to kill the 2.4Ghz network and then the Express will be forced to extend the 5Ghz. Time to experiment

your speeds, both downstream and upstream are pretty much on a par with most of the 100/40 plans I've seen around Townsville so far (mainly Optus, TPG and Telstra), certainly there are some lucky people who are getting a bit better

I was wondering, does anyone have any ideas on what is happening to part of Kirwan which doesn't have FTTP yet? Mynbn did have that part of kirwan listed to receive FTTN and FTTP however, now on the website is lists no information.

    your upload is fine....

you will not get 40Mbps up same as you wont get 100MBps down but 35Mbps down and 95Mbps up is the best you will see

I can usually get up to 38.x mbps up if I place a CBWFQ shape average on the upload at 39.5-9mbps. It prevents any upload hitting NBN's policers and prevents sawtoothing of traffic by buffering excess traffic before it leaves the router. NBNCo wont buffer excess, typically a policer will just drop packets.

I think some residential grade routers support some forms of QoS.. try shape the upload slightly under the subscription rate of 40mbps.

As for download speeds, I'm not sure if you're going to see much gains by doing it this way as it's shaping AFTER the policer... it might make a little difference however by smoothing the packets out into a buffer.

Some tests on Telstra with CBWFQ on a Cisco has seen rarely 97mbps down, but mostly 95mbps (shaped at 99) and 38.x mbps up (shaped at 39.5-9). Of course you'll never get the full bandwidth due to protocol overheads etc.. but there are a couple of little tweaks you can do to milk a little extra out of it... especially on the upload.

    Here's a speedtest from tonight... http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/5185131386

That's some great info Jordee!! If only I could access QOS on the Telstra TG799vac..

  • Jordee

Yeah who knows if that router has QoS.. probably not. I think some of the ASUS ones do.. otherwise, you can't beat a proper cisco ;)

  • 2016-Mar-21, 7:43 pm

I think it's made 'not accessible' by Telstra's firmware, apparently the standard TG799vac has customisable QOS settings.

I live near Willows State School (in 4KIR-05 I think) and about 12 months ago there was work happening in our street cleaning up joints. I asked what the work was for and they said in preparation for FTTN. I think the NBN systems don't know how to show FTTN yet, which is why despite being on Telstra's 12 month plan it doesn't show up on the NBN map.

This I'm not sure of. It is a possibility, because during the early 2000's they used lower gauge copper. It may not be enough for FTTN. This is possibly the reason why much of Mount Louisa ended up with FTTP? Just an educated guess.

As for Carlyle Gardens, I think you'll find they have their own private infrastructure so may not be included in the rollout. That said, I'm not 100% sure.

It's anyone's guess, however if you see the green stuff going down your street, you'll know.

NBNCo have stopped putting "Build Preparation" onto their maps. New areas typically go straight to build these days. If this weren't the case, we'd probably all be on the map already, shaded in Green.

So I just got an email from Mynbn telling me that 4TNS-11 has just gone online. This resulted in several backflips, cartwheels and several other gymnastic feats.

I jump on to check the map and it's still brown????

Edit: TPG's checker tool is showing RFS!!! Telstra's is borked.

So I'm biting the bullet now.

Telstra it is. They have offered the 1TB at 100/40 for $99 so I bit the bullet. TPG have unlimited but I have never gone over 500GB I have now so that shouldn't be a problem. And I'll have more reliable speeds too.

With 4TNS-11 now RFS, it means the last of the brownfield FTTP areas in Townsville has now been switched on. From now on, the majority of suburban areas will be FTTN, with small slices of FTTP.

Telstra will ring a couple of times (if that's your ISP). The day before you're due to have the installation done NBN will ring to confirm that it's still OK to do the install. In my case they rang at 7:30pm so keep your phone close lol!

The NBN installer will then ring about 10-15 minutes before they arrive to again confirm the install. Once they arrive, the installation process should be quite quick (about 20-30 mins, depends on how difficult it is to run conduit etc), and the NTD should be ready to use as soon as it's booted up and has downloaded any available firmware. :)

Hmm when the 'noise' on my fibre was tested (during the PCD install) I mentioned:

he (the technician) wanted to test my PCD for signal strength, so I took the opportunity to have a bit of a chat with him. He said that their target for 'noise' on the fibre line is for it to be less than 2 to 2.5db.

My line (he mentioned there are 2 fibre lines coming in?) tested at 0.99db and 1.01db of noise respectively. He said he could actually get it lower than that, it all depends on how well he lines up the 'splice'. However, he hasn't the time to get them perfect as he has a LOT of houses to do. He said though that my 'noise' is in the perfect range though.

As long as it works though who cares!!

For you guys about to bargain with Telstra, here's the best I could do (signed up before the current $99 deal):

    $119/month

-$20/month bundle discount for the life of the plan
-$10/month bundle discount (have had this for years)
    +$22.50 100/40 speed boost (25% discount)

    = $111.50/month

However, Telstra actually credited me $100 this month to cover my 'disappointment' that I couldn't get the speed boost for free, so I only paid $11.50. :)

So I just got a call from my Telstra case manager. I was hoping it would be advising of an earlier appointment slot.

Of course this was not the reason for the call. Apparently there is a problem with my nbn property identifier. That may cause the appointment to be pushed back. If I'm told this I'll be somewhat cross.

Indeed, i think it depends where/what he was testing, if he was purely testing the lead in from the MPT to the external PCD, that that sounds about spot on (i think its avg .4-.5db loss per join/connector +cable) which comes out pretty close to your 1db.

My 18 was from a fully lit splice from end to end so included all the way back to wherever (FAN/Split).

This is EXACTLY why I'm so happy to be away from Telstra. I've been with them for four years because they were the only ISP to provide me with internet. The first order I made with them they put it under the wrong name with a different DOB and refused to let me change anything. Internode confirmed on the phone that a port was available and confirmed NBNco had approved the appointment.

Got NBN installed in 4TNS-11 today. Placed order with TPG on 27th April, got install date for 05/05 8am-12pm.

Tech turned up just before 10am, put it under the internal stairs exactly where I wanted it, and ran the external conduit really neatly so it is as unobtrusive as possible. Was all done in around half an hour. Not sure when it became active, went out for a couple of hours and it was all live by the time I got back.

Was a bit worried about speed issues as I'd seen TPG mentioned as having CVC issues but looks ok so far. 94 down/33 up at 2pm this afternoon, and getting exactly the same now during the beginning of peak time.

I am a heavy internet user. Just wondering what people think would be a good plan for me. Thanks :)

Optus have some nice unlimited plans to choose from, and those connected in Townsville report pretty consistent speeds (i.e. no congestion during peak times).

Telstra also have a pretty good deal on at the moment for $99/1TB/All calls/Telstra TV/Modem.

Depends on prices. You still have 150GB buffer to account for the extra speeds. If you can get a bigger plan for a tiny bit more then why not? But if it's a reasonably big jump it might be worth staying with 500 and seeing how you go. Easier to up in plan than down.

    Hi all,
I'm just curious if anyone has any information on Greenwood Residential, Kirwan.

Kirwan East Seems to have NBN but anything west of Thuringowa Dr has nothing?

I don't know for sure where each of the areas are but I think you (and I) are in:
    4KIR-05
    Area: Kirwan, Mount Louisa
    Expected Build: 01-Oct-16
    Expected RFS: 30-Jun-17
    Premises: 3,682
    FTTN: 1,795

The NBN co maps don't show it yet though. I think it will appear when the build starts in October.

Now that is quite lackluster for a 100Mb/s plan. However this machine is on WiFi at the other end of the house so I am expecting a less than perfect service on it. However my media center PC is connected by cable and it's about 80Mb. Will give it some time and see how it goes.

yeah, that is likely the wifi. Unfortunately now that you are with TPG, that is likely why you only got 80mb..

  • 2016-May-13, 11:13 am
    Jordee

Nah, you can't get fibre on demand until the area is RFS. It would have been deemed to be more cost effective to run fibre as opposed to FTTN. In some areas with new pits and conduits, it's better value for money. Also, newer burbs usually ran a lower gauge copper which may not work on FTTN. It's luck of the draw...

Townsville is predominantly FTTP. Essentially anywhere that is currently listed as "Available" is FTTP. The build areas in the northern suburbs will be FTTN.

Cranbrook is FTTP. The best ISP's for guaranteed speed are usually Telstra or Optus. Others have seen some backhaul issues. Others can comment as to whether or not that situation has improved.

    Otherwise.. Welcome to Townsville!

I don't believe the Burdekin region NBN (FTTN) rollout has it's own thread so I'll just post here. Not to mention it's on the Mackay POI.

about to dump Activ8me soon due to horrible peak speeds.. :( like 60 or so kb/s some times on steam downloads

is anyone in townsville on optus report on what they are like speed wise ?? the issue with alot of RSP's is they prioritize traffic to speedtest.net so when you test you get 90 odd meg then you check fast.com and notice your actually dont have good speeds

  • Jordee

Not sure if they'd prioritise. Take in mind of course that when you speedtest from a local Australian server, your speedtests will probably utilise a peering feed as opposed to an internet feed. A steam download for instance may be traversing a main internet feed with higher contention. If speedtest.net is reflecting higher speeds than general internet access, then I would guess that perhaps your ISP has highly congested internet link(s) particularly in international transit, but this isn't uncommon in Australia :)

My iiNet connection seems to have improved several orders of magnitude this weekend during peak time. Usually Friday and Saturday evenings are sitting below 20mb/s. This weekend I've been getting full speeds on my 100/40 fttp plan.

Hopefully this is permanent and not the exception to the rule.

I feel for you mate. This countries internet is a shambles. The fastest connection I've ever had was around 11Mbps in Wulguru years ago with Rawnet.

The house I am in now wasn't even built back then and my connection is half that nearly 10 years on :/ 5Mbps.

The way the rollout has been done just confuses me. Wulguru exchange is NBN ready, and there are pockets around which have NBN FTTP already, but instead of finishing one suburb before expanding into the next it almost seems that they have been throwing darts at a map to decide who gets NBN and in what order.

I have heard from people in Ayr (East Ayr at least) that the FTTN cutover didn't go very well and many are without phones and internet since Thursday. An NBN person said on Friday that the cutover failed and that Wednesday is when it would be fixed.

Not sure how it is supposed to work but I know of a place that doesn't have internet, just a phone line. They were sent a box (not sure what it was, I assume a bare bones VDSL/VOIP box) that needed to be plugged in after the cutover. They did that but no phone service.

I live in east Ayr, was supposed to be connected on 12/8, didn't happen (shocker). It's been rescheduled for 24/8 this Wednesday. I'll be interested to see if I'm actually connected this time, thankfully my existing ADSL and phone are both working normally. From what I've read some people have had up to 9 goes at getting connected, so I remain skeptical that I'll be switched over on Wednesday.

WOW. This is ridiculous. I was praying for 35/15..

    Actual 75/40!
(best speedtest results I can seem to get is around 70/39)

I have no bloody idea whats going on but I LIKE IT.

Estimated line length ~ 850m, I have since engaged Rendrag to try to help me out here especially given my surprising sync speeds.

    Cheers all

They are putting in NBN (FTTN I think) on the corner of Sandstone Drive and Bellbine Street in Kirwan. They have put a new green cabinet in and they are doing copper work. There has been a couple of Telstra people there for a few days with the manhole open. I think they are terminating the new copper cable from the cabinet to the pillar.

Anyone know what is going on down Kelso way with regards to what technology they are using?

Finder last time I checked said fixed wireless but I'm hoping it is FTTN so I may have a chance to buy a cheap house out there with decent speeds. That or install a VM at my parents in law and piggyback off their connection.

Probably a mix of FTTN and wireless, although new estates will probably be FTTP.

Hey all, was just connected today with a 100/40 plan through Telstra. Was great for part of the day (11am-3pm) getting close to those speeds, but soon after that it tanked hard to around 10/35 which in terms of download is less then what I used to get on copper. Are these peak time slowdowns a common thing?

    No, they are not.

Are you on FTTP or FTTN?

FTTP, the exchange is also just down the road (100m away). As soon as it hit around 1am last night I got my full speed again, but after testing again at 10am I had slowed down to 18/35

On FTTP it doesn't matter how far away the exchange is, you'll always get full speeds. Distance isn't a factor.

However, your choice of ISP is. I've been with Telstra FTTP since March, and have never seen any slowdowns like you describe. I'd be contacting Telstra as there has to be an issue somewhere.

Have they released a timetable for other areas in Townsville, other than sometime in the next 3 tears. Still waiting, not too patiently, for Wulguru Exchange.
