So with the NBN it would theoretically be possible to order two 100/40 services from an ISP and use a router to load balance to achieve a 200/80 connection?

The overall speed of your connection would still be 100/40 to the end user. The user will have a lower probability of congestion and reduced speed. You will have the internal network load shared across two 100/40 connections (unless the ONT offers something like a multilink PPP protocol to give you a total of 200/80).

Multilink PPP would be nice but as I pointed out above (and the slightly more spoon-fed versions got OT'd by mods), it is cheaper from an AVC cost perspective to simply jump to the next plan level than run two plans of the lower speed and attempt to load balance or bond them.

It is for this reason that it is my personal opinion that Multilink PPP is not going to even be offered on NBN connections. There is simply zero requirement.

The 4 Data outlets on the NBNco ONT can be used for multiple reasons. One might be Internet/Data, another might be for an IPTV service. Your workplace might give you a 12/1 VPN encapsulated data link back to your corporate network on another as a telecommuting benefit.

Another quite interesting benefit is you can have 4 separate data plans in the one home, which is simply great for share houses where there is always one massive downloader, or one gamer always wanting the best ping possible. Now they can have separate internet accounts with different ISP's and they no longer impact on each other.
