Bertram RIM ADSL2+ When/If Ever?? part 2

  • Ezekyle

I am on IInet 8MB Home 5 40/40 cos of the slow speeds and limited use, now its back to the speeds i used to have NOR I'm gonna be ripping thru DL's again...time to clear my 4TB Hard Drives lol. I am actually looking at getting Comcen/Spin deal with the 120GB $4.95 plan. They seem to have dropped their unlimited plans. Doesnt seem to be to many bad reports about Comcen/Spin like most cheaper ISP's

Latency was low and stable all last night. I haven't done a speed test kind of pointless on the 1.5 plan. Latency is what I'm looking for anyways, there's not all that much I download beyond game patches, MS Technet and the occasional Linux .iso

I'm still interested in what is being provisioned in my DA on/by 21st June...I'm going to hold off upgrading my plan until I find out what is shaking there in case they are putting ADSL2 hardware in (I'm 100m from the RIM cabinet should fly).

All in all though I'm pretty damned happy. It took a while, but we finally got there. I don't know which person or organisation convinced Telstra to do the upgrades but they have my thanks.

Meh, yeah its always been like that.

I think if you're hooked up to a ADSL2 exchange it reports a positive with the usual disclaimer that 'due to Telstra RIMMING poor suckers', you might not be included as the internet world moves on.

Bring on NBN, but uncapped 8M will do nicely for now :)

I haven't seen anything confirming this but it's always a possibility. I guess at the moment we should just enjoy our full speed 8mb connection. I know people with adsl2 that only sync at about 6mb so we are getting a better deal than them.

Hopefully the rest of Bertram/Wellard is done soon.

    No.

the backhaul upgrades are because of the amount of complaints they get because of peak time speeds being less than ten percent of the connection we are paying for.

Upgrading to ADSL2+ would require several hundred thousand dollars per rim.

Anyone else notice the speeds last night were good, I mean really good, >840kb/s

I re-visited the TW excel reports again today, and they have changed.

This is from my last post:
    DA004 No ports available
    DA038, DA057 103
    DA049 8
    DA062 No ports available
    DA063 26
    DA066, DA076 2 267

    DA082, DA086 No ports available
    DA091, DA092 No ports available
    DA094 32
    DA096 384
    DA097 343
    DA099, DA100 26
    DA101 83
    DA102 349

    And again today:
    DA038, DA057 103
    DA049 8
    DA062 No ports available
    DA066, DA076 2
    DA073 No ports available
    DA074 No ports available
    DA079, DA081, DA093 22
    DA080, DA084, DA089 1
    DA081, DA085 43
    DA082, DA086 2
    DA091, DA092 No ports available
    DA094 33
    DA099, DA100 26
    DA101 83

There's DA's missing now??? And all the ADSL2+ ports have been removed...Mistake?
I received an e-mail from my ISP telling me ADSL2+ is available in my area, but this is partly true. I have ignored it as ports are enabled at the exchange, not the DA's. But I'm tempted to put in an application anyway, just to be certain I'm stuck on ADSL1.

I would hope so. Can't see why Telstra speeds could be worse than they currently are. Even if the speeds are the same, the plan is the same value, so it's no real loss. But the upstream gain would be awesome :P

Most summer afternoons our ADSL connection (dodo) goes down then comes back up and then down again and then back up, at around 4-7 mintue cycles.

    Anyone else seeing this?

    Any idea what going on?

  • Ezekyle

Mine does the same thing, holds sink for about 3-4 minutes, then drops. Happens precisely between 2pm and 6.30 then clears up. Been happening for years, ever 3-4 mths. Usually only goes for about 2 weeks. IInet cant do a single thing because Telfail comes out and claims nothing wrong with the line

    Mine does the same thing,

Mine was displaying similar behaviour, but it'd be fine until the weather got hot. No problems all through the cooler months. On Monday it started mucking up around 11am. (It was hot (the weather))....

...then by 9pm it was down permanently. Called Dodo. 45 minutes trouble shooting through fax / alarm isolation swapping cables etc. Dial tone: check. No DSL light on modem. We finished up with the need to check the modem elsewhere.

Tuesday, check the modem elsewhere modem is fine. Call Dodo back and case is escalated. They keep in touch with progress (thanks Dodo). This morning (Thursday) Mrs says the extra lights on the modem are back on. I let Dodo know as requested. They said there had been a local outage this morning and understood work could still be in progress when I called. They contacted the outage service team and confirmed that there would be no more outages for the day.

??? Was the local outage related to fixing my issue?
??? Have my intermittent drop-outs in hot weather been fixed? (Today was mild.)
??? Legalis, will you see any improvement?
    ???

hmm ive noticed the latency is quite bad lately. Ever since we had the backhaul upgrade it has been sweet. Last couple of weeks though it has been a bit dodgy.

Take a look at average ping to www.3fl.net below

    Ping statistics for 203.0.178.36:
    Packets: Sent = 1796, Received = 1784, Lost = 12 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 15ms, Maximum = 1749ms, Average = 290ms

    Anyone else ?

It's just a pitty that Telstra have chosen only a few cabinets to "top hat", would be nice to see ALL of the RIM's in the suburb added to the list.
Of course MNDA077 will most likely be last, as the first to be installed and the last to receive an upgrade :(

MDA077 is mine too, but at least we are on the plan :) Also, from my research, the reason Telstra are doing the tophats, is that once the NBN is rolled out, they are being paid around $3k/customer that they migrate from one of their contracted ADSL2 plans onto NBN. If this is true (even with a smaller figure), than this would be a compelling reason for them to roll out Tophats, blanket drop letters to all of us to sign on the new ADSL2 plans and then roll us into the NBN later on.

Waht! Da077 is not on the list, I even had another look:

    MDNACA6 MDNA Medina WA 79;93

    MDNAP62 MDNA Medina WA 62
    MDNAP63 MDNA Medina WA 63
    MDNAP74 MDNA Medina WA 74

DA077 has a history of being upgraded later rather than sooner. I continue to get better performance on my 3G tablet than using it on the Wi-Fi...very sad...

I havent read this thread in months and just Monday I checked with TPG to see if I could get an adsl2 connection, and voila, got home today and speeds are clocking in around 11-12mbps where as my adsl1 was regularly 5-7. Same plan (100GB/100GB), same price, ($49), better speed. Not bad. I may be moving to Wellard next year if we buy the land we want to build, and of course sounds like NBN is coming down the pipe soon, but still nice.

Only 11-12Mbit? I would think if you are within 1km from the cabinet you would be hitting up to 20M? What's everyone else getting on these tophat style setups?

In my last house I was about 1km away from exchange and hitting 20M.

What's the difference comparing the DSLAMs in these cabinets to the ones installed in the actual exchange? Any performance limitations with the cabinet style of DSLAM?

  • 2012-Aug-8, 3:08 pm

I am syncing at 21mbit. My cabinet is not too far away from me.

I think there may be a downside though. Now that everyone has 20mbit I am starting to get high latency again! Hopefully it's just something on westnets side.

Hmm, I just did a test now (Sunday morning) and only clocked 9mbs, seems to be worse every test I've done since switching to adsl2 mid last week. Still slightly faster than my usual 6-7 on adsl1.

Any idea why or what I could do differently? I'm with TPG, which shouldn't make much difference I'd think. Did a couple full resets on the modem, and entered some modem settings TPG sent me.

    I would love 20mbs.

And yes I live close by that cabinet, walk the dog through that park pretty often.

Edit: nevermind, just a simple thing of changing the ADSL parameters on my router, it was still on adsl1. I'm not the most tech savvy guy... :P
On the first speedtest it clocked in at 19mbs, so very happy with that.

There's something wrong with that. At 15.5 attenuation you should get 8Mbps on ADSL1 or around 20Mbps on ADSL2+ (I'm not sure which you're on). You sync at 3.5Mbps.

Also, that's a LOT of errors. Do a pingtest and see if there are any lost packets.

I got my ISP to apply for ADSL2+ on the Friday when I saw the top hat fitted, all that can happen is it's rejected at some stage. I'll just re-apply.

Just wonder if being on the homeline basic will stop Telstra from changing to 2+?? Was thinking they may have a flag on their system which will reject the app each time. So I might up the phone plan just in case, don't know if anyone knows more on this?

P77 has two cabinets because they could not fit all the ADSL1 ports in the original RIM and then built the ADSL1 CMUX ports in the second cabinet. They have a tie cable between. IE one does dial tone, one does ADSL1. (Now ADSL2+ with the top hat)

Yeah i dont think we will see any physical activity for some time especially when construction commencing is worded as such:

"Construction commenced relates to the phase of work in an area where contract instructions have been issued and our construction partners can commence work on detailed design and field inspections. It also refers to the date that NBN Co releases the rollout map for your area and signals the beginning of engagement with your local community and council."

and pretty much all of Leda,Orelia,Bertram is highlighted as:

"Construction to commence within one year we will commence construction in your area from Feb 2013 in phases with last construction scheduled to commence in Nov 2013*."

so we could have contracts issued Feb right up to Nov? and then they can start doing inspections !??!

when does the digging and laying start? 2014 ?!?!

we wont see a service until 2015, it says average time to service from 'construction commencing' to be 12 months but i seriously doubt we will have Active NBN services by Feb 14 or even Nov 14

Long time, no visit from me. Everything's been OK.

Until last Thursday. Since then, all activity has slowed.

I was fine with the WWOS live cast of the TDU on the lowest quality setting Mon to Wed then from Thursday on it would constantly drop audio and frequently buffer. My internet radio feeds have also been suffering, dropping out many times/day. Youtube loads are terrible. Even a simple refresh of a BOM data page takes 5+ seconds.

The speedtest of my 8Mbps Dodo connection reveals nothing wayward: 121ms / 2.79Mbps / 0.26Mbps.

Interesting development on the NBN front: construction in the Kwinana area was scheduled to be in four stages, with the final stage commencing in November 2013. As of the latest one year rollout plan, construction is now scheduled for three stages, with the final stage commencing in June 2013.

Morning All! Been a while since I've posted in here.

Looks like constructions is scheduled to commence by July 30, this is what comes up when I type my address in on the nbnco.com.au -> when do I get it? page.

I haven't had much trouble with my ADSL connection, constantly getting about 1.7MBs downloads. There have been one or two issues but I think they were moreso to do with my provider (II) than the hardware in Bertram.

I see construction has slowed on the new community centre near the shops! I don't know why they even bothered.

Given how quiet this thread is, maybe it's just my service.

Over the last week or so we have been having internet outages during the day for an hour or so. I assumed some work was being done somewhere. Connection speed when reinstated was normal.

Yesterday our reinstated connection was terrible 500+ms pings and 470Kbs downloads. (Usually 110 ms, 3.5Mbps)

Today, outage as per usual. After about an hour, reinstated as per regular speeds. Then another outage... that is still going. 10hrs.

By 2pm I was investigating. Dodo has a Customer Service Guarantee Exemption in place for many parts of south west WA... as does iPrimus... as does Telstra.
    https://accountmanagement.dodo.com.au/status/
    http://www.iprimus.com.au/msd/
    http://www.telstra.com.au/abouttelstra/commitments/mass-service-disruption/

Services expected to be back to normal by 7th June. Also found that the phone line is down. Probably was in all the above cases.

Have been in touch with Dodo through their critical support email. Waiting....

Anyone else seeing anything like this? the day time outages or the current on-going outage?

Well there is some sort of issue out there . http://servicestatus.telstra.com/servicestatus/goc.do?q=postcode_6167.html&postcode=6167

The service status shows faults that affect many users, but not neccessarily "MSD" level ( http://www.telstra.com.au/consumer-advice/customer-service/mass-service-disruption/ there's probably one of these for you too. ) Also they may put internal ADSL faults at lower priority than storm damage repairs. ...so they can repair faults that may get worse if its not repaired quick.

Anyway the service status website lets you know when its fixed, and if after they fixed the servicestatus issue you still have a problem you might assume they won't ever fix the problem because its specific to you.

Anyone happy to join me in some comparative speed testing? We want to go with another ISP but want to be sure we are getting better performance for up to double the spend.

I'm with Dodo and though the price is great and the phone support are very nice, the congestion at peak times and the number of outages we've had are giving us reason to look elsewhere. (50-60% outages have been due to Telstra hardware but in some cases compounded by Dodo)

For a rough idea, we are just north of Sanctuary Reserve, sync at 14Mbps and speedtest.net at 6-9Mbps most of the time. Peak times though are down to 1.5Mbps. Ping is 110msec. (Internode in Perth)

    So what testing?
Maybe 3 consecutive test twice a day over three days? Two weekdays and a weekend? Peak time and any other time that suits? Any other suggestions?

Let me know if you want do this and we'll agree to times so we've got a more accurate result.

I like on Sanctuary Drive close to the daycare and new community centre. I sync at around 21mb and am always able to achieve max throughput whenever downloading. (WestNet). Haven't had any congestion issues since the work was done on our RIM and then they did the ADSL top hat upgrade on top of that.

Out of interest, what score does google give your ISP in the video quality report?

And if you play this youtube video at 720p in the early to mid evening, does it play through OK or does it need to buffer every 30 seconds?

We are all on the RIM so things can get congested at peak times
